REINIS NITIŠS TO COMPETE IN OPENING EVENT OF THE 2019 WORLD RX SEASON IN ABU DHABI
n April 5, the 2019 FIA World Rallycross Championship season will begin in the United Arab Emirates. The freshly-built rallycross track is located in the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit in Abu Dhabi. Reinis Nitišs, the 2018 FIA European Rallycross Champion in Supercar category, will also be competing.
The Jēkabpils native will begin the new World Rallycross season with his GRX teammates Niclas Grönholm and Timur Timerzyanov, challenging others in their Hyundai i20 Supercars.
“I am excited for the 2019 season. There are lots of unknowns – a new circuit, a new car, new teammates. It will be a huge challenge, but, at the same time, I am happy to be able to compete against World Championship drivers,” begins Reinis Nitišs. “A little while back, I took part in the Abu Dhabi circuit presentation – it looks very interesting and I am sure that there will lots of thrilling action. This will be the first time a rallycross event takes place in the evening and the track will be artificially lit.”
During the off-season, GRX have been hard at work in improving the Hyundai i20 Supercars, and further development of the cars is one of Nitišs’ tasks, with him serving a development driver role during in-season testing, in addition to competing in several events.
“For us, it is important to have Reinis with the team in Abu Dhabi, as it will be a new track for everyone. Competing with three newest generation cars, we will be able to gather more telemetry data and driver insights to fight for the best possible result. It is important for all team to work together and improve as quickly as possible from the very first event of the year,” says GRX team director Jussi Pinomäki.
